Halliburton unveils new logging-while-drilling technology

Oil field service provider Halliburton has introduced new logging-while-drilling technology called EarthStar ultra-deep resistivity service to enable operators to map reservoir and fluid boundaries more than 200ft from the wellbore.

The new technology is expected to streamline exploration process by providing comprehensive view of the reservoir.

It will also enable operators to avoid costly pilot holes and sidetracks; take informed geosteering decisions in real-time; as well as devise better plans of future field development.

Halliburton Sperry Drilling vice-president Lamar Duhon said: “We are excited to release what is truly a disruptive technology that enables operators to see farther into the reservoir while drilling than ever before.

“The launch of EarthStar resulted from collaboration with customers to engineer a solution that enhances reservoir understanding and helps reduce well time.”

EarthStar utilises azimuthal electromagnetic measurements to delineate the geological structure around a wellbore.

The Halliburton RoxC geosteering software utilises these recorded measurements to provide real-time visualisations of the reservoir structure and fluid boundaries.

Following the usage, the operator of the resource is expected to have a better knowledge of the reservoir and its potentiality.

EarthStar technology service can be used in multiple applications such as geomapping to predict total hydrocarbon volume in the reservoir and planning subsequent development activities.

Furthermore, it will also enable operators to position the wells accurately to optimise recovery, as well as receive early indications of potential drilling hazards.

Halliburton stated that an operator in the North Sea recently installed EarthStar in a mature carbonate field to determine the remaining oil volume in a partially water-flooded reservoir.
